Long-standing partnership with component manufacturer Chromalloy expanded: Lufthansa Technik now offering parts for IAE V2500 engines

Airlines operating V2500 SelectOne engines from International Aero Engines (IAE) can now have them overhauled using cost-effective PMA (Parts Manufacturer Approval) components from Lufthansa Technik. In collaboration with Chromalloy, one of the world’s leading engine component manufacturers, the MRO provider has developed six different turbine blade types for the V2500 SelectOne engine. Two of these – the second stage High Pressure Turbine (HPT) blade and the seventh stage High Pressure Compressor (HPC) blade – have already received FAA certification and have been in operational service for several months in multiple engines across various Lufthansa Group airlines. Chromalloy and Lufthansa Technik presented details of their cooperation and outlined future plans today at MRO Europe in London.

PMA components are replacement parts approved by aviation authorities such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Although not produced by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), these parts are equivalent in form, fit and function and meet the same high safety and quality standards. For airlines, PMA components represent a financially attractive alternative, offering significant cost savings compared to OEM parts without compromising safety or performance.

The PMA blades already approved for use in this engine type powering the Airbus A320ceo family have been installed multiple times by Lufthansa Technik as part of V2500 SelectOne overhaul events. Within Lufthansa Group airlines, these two components have now been in operational service for several months. To date, Lufthansa Technik has installed the PMA blades in a double-digit number of engines, which have collectively accumulated approximately 1,800 flight hours and over 1,100 flight cycles.

“Initial in-service results have been very satisfactory, just as expected,” said Dr. Alexander Feuersaenger, Senior Vice President Fleet Management Lufthansa Group. “Following close coordination between the Lufthansa Group Engine Management and the Lufthansa Group airlines, we decided to adopt PMA components for our V2500 engines powering the A321ceo fleet. The option introduced by Lufthansa Technik represents a technically sound and economically attractive alternative for us as the launch customer. It offers an excellent cost-performance ratio while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.”

“Going forward, customers who choose Lufthansa Technik for their V2500 SelectOne engine overhauls will have a choice,” said Thomas Boettger, Vice President Corporate Procurement at Lufthansa Technik. “They can either continue to rely on OEM parts or opt for the more cost-efficient PMA components — with identical performance and safety. We’re proud to offer this alternative together with Chromalloy. This development marks a significant milestone in our partnership.”

“We’re honored to continue our long-standing relationship with Lufthansa Technik through 2035,” stated Chromalloy Chief Executive Officer Chris Celtruda. “This extension reflects our mutual trust and commitment to excellence in engine component performance. Chromalloy remains a pioneer in PMA development for high-value airfoil applications, and we look forward to delivering dependable, value-driven solutions to Lufthansa Technik and our global customer base.”

By deciding to jointly develop and market PMA components for the V2500 SelectOne engine, Chromalloy and Lufthansa Technik are expanding their long-standing collaboration, which has already proven successful in projects for the CF6-80C2 and CFM56-3 engine types.
