New engine types

Gearing up for the future

Many new engine types are coming to market. We have built up our capabilities for these engine types and will continue to expand them in the future – using our experience from more than 20 engine rollouts in the past. As for current engine types today, we are defining services for future engines with excellent quality in short turnaround times at the best prices. We offer operators of new aircraft a growing portfolio for their specific engines – covering all services for the entire engine lifecycle.

To perfectly maintain the new engine types, we increased our capabilities:

  • LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B engines are overhauled at Lufthansa Technik Headquarters in Hamburg.
  • PW1100 and PW1500G power plants are serviced at Engine Maintenance Europe (EME Aero), a joint venture with MTU Aero Engines.
  • Trent XWB engines are serviced at N3 Engine Overhaul Services, our joint venture company with Rolls-Royce located in Arnstadt, Germany.

Welcome LEAP-1B!

We have concluded a LEAP-1B CFM Branded Service Agreement (CBSA) with CFM International (CFM). Being effective since 1st January 2022, this CFM license enables Lufthansa Technik to offer the widest range of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for CFM LEAP-1B engines.

Under the terms of the agreement, we continue to make use of our extensive know-how of engine MRO and provide the full range of MRO services tailored specifically to your requirements.

As the first full independent MRO-provider worldwide to sign a CBSA for the LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B, we focus on developing new MRO services and optimizing the cost of ownership for your LEAP-1B engines. Look forward to customized MRO services such as:

  • Engine overhaul
  • Parts repair
  • On-wing support
  • Engineering support

Our LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B services

During a quick turn shop visit, our colleagues changed the high pressure turbine shrouds. The intention of a quick turn is to return the engine to the aircraft as quickly and cost-effectively as possible by rectifying specific limited technical issues. Quick turns keep engines in operation up to their originally planned overhaul shop visit. Thereby, we do what we do best - keeping engines in the air.

Thanks to our highly motivated colleagues and our extensive experience, we were able to achieve readiness on the LEAP engines.

Michael Kirstein

Head of Operations Engine Services

Following our ambition to support you during each stage of your engine operation lifecycle, it is essential for us to be on top of the development and well prepared to meet your requirements. The experience that we gained over the years and multiple trainings on the LEAP-1A provide a solid foundation to support you during the early phase of your LEAP engine operations and beyond.

We are continuing our journey and have been expanding our capabilities on the LEAP-1A, including qualification for the latest quick turn procedures and the introduction of repair capabilities on piece part level. Our Mobile Engine Services offers a broad spectrum of customized repair and maintenance solutions worldwide and is our fast track to avoid major engine shop visits. Depending on the requirements of the individual repair solution, the available options range from InFIELD services performed on-wing or on-site to a number of smaller InSTATION events performed at our local repair stations. We now support CFM LEAP-1A  operators with InFIELD solutions ranging from borescope inspections to QEC removal and installations and Fuel Nozzle Replacements – just to name a few.

Lufthansa Technik is an authorized LEAP-1A Service Provider licensed by CFM International.

Engine Fleet Management

SmartLIFE: Optimizing the engine's lifecycle

The end of an engine's service life presents a powerful opportunity to reduce the costs.

This is why we developed a completely customizable product ensuring the most cost-effective maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) solution. Because when an aircraft fleet is destined for phase-out, the engine services paradigm changes from overhaul to providing thrust. With SmartLIFE, we adapt the measures taken precisely to the desired remaining service life. The service spectrum offers utmost flexibility, from a reduced depth of penetration during overhaul to replacing a power plant completely, for example with a leased engine. Minimized MRO costs and cash flow optimization are just two of the many benefits. Numerous additional features, from on-site repairs to the use of surplus parts or modules, round out this service.

SmartLIFE

Benefit from your engine greentime

The current situation changed the demands within the aviation industry and thus the lifecycle of an engine. That is why we adapted our existing SmartLIFE service and developed a variety of solutions ensuring the most cost-effective use of your engines. Because parked aircraft imply parked engines with remaining greentime, swapping engines and modules can reduce the MRO costs significantly. By changing the engines or modules at the right time you may postpone or even avoid larger shop visits and furthermore prevent a potential bottleneck once the overhaul demand increases.

Whether you want to change your entire engine or just parts of it, we support you with our technical know-how. In combination with our Mobile Engine Services, we offer you different solutions that range from consultation to the complete handling of the engine swap including the logistics.
