Warm feet and fully charged phones

  • Smart floor panel heating optimizes comfort on board
  • Three new solutions for USB charging in the cabin

Lufthansa Technik presents two innovative cabin products at this year's Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX): HeatNOW is a heating system for floor panels which is easy to install and maintain whereas three smart options for USB charging offer inflight power to passengers.

Comfortable warm feet with HeatNOW

With HeatNOW, cold floors in aircraft cabins belong to the past overcoming a lot of shortcomings of already available systems. Together with the Austrian company Villinger, Lufthansa Technik's engineers have developed a completely new approach for floor panel heating by introducing a self-regulating heated coating: Its internal electrical resistance increases with higher temperatures. Thereby, hot spots and possible damages resulting from thermal effects are avoided. Layers of carbon fiber protect the heated coating on both sides. Thanks to the thin and flexible design of the heating pad it can be removed and exchanged without much effort.

Lufthansa Technik will offer HeatNOW as a complete installation kit, readily assembled for different aircraft types. The system is currently being tested for approval in the Airbus A320 as well as the Boeing 737 and 757.

USB plugs installed overhead or attached to the seat

Whether a flight is short distance or long haul – the need to recharge laptops, smartphones and tablets is constantly growing among passengers. Lufthansa Technik now offers three solutions for USB charging: either installed in the overhead panel or directly attached to the seat, while the latter option also offers additional revenue possibilities.

The first solution can be simply installed in the passenger service unit within the overhead panel and is supplied by the untapped energy of the reading lights. There is no need for additional installations, which is why it is approximately 50 percent lighter than competing products.

Easily attached to any kind of seat, the second solution does not affect the existing aircraft seat certification (ETSO/TSO) and enables the passenger to find the USB plug easily thanks to its smart illumination.

The third option furthermore adds the possibility for airlines to opt for generating ancillary revenue by displaying advertisements or letting passengers pay for recharging.
