FlyNet®

High-speed internet access at cruising altitude
Passengers can stay online during flight

With its FlyNet® Ku-band-based broadband internet services and innovative technology, Lufthansa is one of the pioneers of civil aviation. Lufthansa offered its passengers seamless internet access throughout the entire long-haul fleet. Every passenger thus has access to a diversified communications and entertainment system, so that they can remain connected with the rest of the world, even at a cruising altitude of 10,000 meters.

Cutting-edge cabin connectivity – always online

A wireless IP-network throughout the cabin offers passengers high-speed wireless access to the Internet via their laptop, iPad® or smartphone. Thanks to the high bandwidth connection, e-mails – even with file attachments – can be sent and received without any time delay. Furthermore, FlyNet® enables business travellers to connect to their corporate server via a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Data communication using the GSM and GPRS international cell phone standards will soon also be possible. In addition to WLAN, the communication options on board will then include cell phone text messaging and data transfer with smartphones such as the iPhone® or BlackBerry. Lufthansa offers the service in cooperation with its partners Panasonic Avionics Corporation and Deutsche Telekom. FlyNet® is available throughout the cabin, irrespective of the travel class.

Lufthansa Technik – a connectivity pioneer

With system integration provided by Lufthansa Technik, Lufthansa operated the world's first scheduled flight with broadband Internet access on 15 January 2003. From May 2004 until the end of 2006, when Lufthansa's then-partner Connexion by Boeing discontinued the service, wireless broadband Internet enjoyed increasing popularity. Within these years Lufthansa Technik equipped 69 Lufthansa long-range aircraft with broadband internet. From then on Lufthansa Technik gained experiences with various systems and proved to be the first choice for installing satellite communication technologies.
