Simple, fast and safe: Seat Cover Tool always finds the right part number

Maintenance companies have to do more than just carry out technical inspections. They must also regularly check the condition and cleanliness of the cabin and in particular of the passenger seats. At the largest German hub in Frankfurt am Main, Lufthansa Technik's cabin mechanics check between 50 and 60 long-haul aircraft alone, every day. If any of the seat covers, seat cushions or safety belts are dirty or damaged, they are replaced immediately. To date, the correct part number of the required component has been identified manually – a process that is relatively time-consuming and can sometimes lead to mistakes.

Digital assistance system Seat Cover Tool

Now, however, Lufthansa Technik has developed the Seat Cover Tool, a digital assistance system that enables the part numbers of seat covers, cushions and safety belts to be identified quickly, simply and exactly. It is the first application of this kind in the world and can be installed and called up on all common mobile devices and PCs. Seat Cover Tool has been integrated in the eDOC platform, which is where all the technical documentation is made available and archived in digital form. The application is used via the eDOC system's interface and accesses the data records that are stored by the platform, which ensures that the source data is always up to date. Currently, the assistance system is only available for the Airbus A380 fleet of Lufthansa. Other aircraft types, fleets and frequently required seat components are scheduled to be integrated as early as 2019.

Great savings potential

Using the Seat Cover Tool reduces the time required to identify the correct part numbers from an average of six minutes to less than one minute. When it comes to the Airbus A380 fleet, this results in potential savings of 120,000 euros per year – and that's just for the digital identification of the part numbers of seat covers that need replacing. Step by step, the new assistance system will also be rolled out to other aircraft types, fleets and cabin components. This is possible with relatively little effort and will lighten the employees' workload even further while also opening up further savings potential. The current focus is on all standard aircraft types and fleets at Lufthansa Passage, but in the future, the assistance system may also be offered to other MRO companies for a fee. In that case, other airlines operators would also benefit from the application's potential.
